In bloom, indoors



Whilst nature is awakening outside after a mild winter with quite a lot of snow, indoors the Saintpaulias have been blooming for weeks. These so-called African violets are tropical plants from Kenya and Tanzania that flower profusely on the windowsill of my office. Mind you, I only have success with the small-leaved, small-flowered types that are closest to the wild plants. The blowsy big-bloomed varieties have shown to be more sensitive to temperature changes behind my north facing windows.



These lovely blue flowers always remind me of my grandmother who showed me how to propagate them from a leaf cut in half; a true miracle when you are 7 years old...
